Presidents Trophy Report

Honorary President Caroline Marler makes her choice

As Honorary President I purchased a trophy last year in memory of Faye Holden, a NMAC W35 athlete who sadly died not so long ago. Faye was a terrific NMAC member, who at The Inter Area would do any event to help out and also assisted with managing the team, without being asked. The idea was for it to be awarded after each Inter Area meeting to someone who showed similar spirit and willingness to go the extra mile for the team on the day.

Last year we didn’t have an Inter Area, so I awarded it to John Wright for his outstanding performances in the year that had passed.

At Nuneaton on July 18th 2021 we had a terrific team effort, made initially possible by two hard working captains who very nearly got every event covered, which was amazing. We achieved 3rd , nearly getting second despite our members having to travel far and the clash with The  Grand Prix at Sheffield. We had athletes who surpassed 20 points, excluding relay points ( Anthony O’Brien, Neal Petley, Craig Pounder, Jon Rutter, Anita Saunders, Ilse Hemming, myself Caroline Marler, Julie Wilson, Nia Rutter, Beth Lishman). We had a lot of athletes who did 3 events or 3 and a relay. The athlete who did the most events was Ilse Hemming,W60 – 4 events and a relay!

We had quite a few athletes gaining first position and we had three people winning twice , John Wright, Anthony O’ Brien and Nia Rutter( plus a relay first).

There are a lot of others who could be mentioned; for doing events they hadn’t done for years, running in strange leg splints, travelling miles for just one event, Paul, the men’s team manager leaving at 6.30am from Lyme Regis and for the points, doing the walk not his usual event. We had two throwers, Beth and Julie who did 4 throwing events each

There were so many heroes and heroines on the day but the person to whom I want to award ‘The President’s Trophy’ is someone who exemplified Faye Holden’s spirit in my opinion.

This person is the woman’s Team Manager, Carol Holt who as well as managing the athletes and running her event the 100m in a PB, ran in two other distances totally different from her speciality, the 1500m and the 3000m to get points for our team.

Well done Carol!

We will present the Trophy to her in the not to distant future.’
